  • Global Nutrition Observatory | NNEdPro

< Our Work page Global Nutrition Observatory for Medical Education (GNOME) Initiative SUPPORT Initiative managed by NNEdPro in partnership with PAN The Global Nutrition Observatory for Medical Education (GNOME) initiative marks a major milestone in global efforts to strengthen nutrition education for healthcare professionals. Building upon the success of the NEPHELP (Nutrition Education Policy for Health Professionals) project, GNOME serves as a global hub for evidence generation, knowledge sharing, and capacity building in medical nutrition education. While NEPHELP empowered healthcare professionals with practical tools and highlighted the urgent need for improved nutrition training in curricula, GNOME takes the next step by: Conducting annual surveys across NNEdPro’s 10 Regional Networks (over 1,000 members globally) to capture the state of medical nutrition education. Generating evidence to drive policy and curriculum change, led jointly by our US and UK & Ireland Regional Networks. Ensuring medical nutrition education remains a global priority, directly impacting healthcare workforce training and patient care. In a shared commitment to advance this mission, NNEdPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health and PAN International each pledged an initial £5,000 to initiate and implement the early phases of GNOME. This joint contribution forms the foundation for establishing a sustainable framework for the Observatory’s activities and for launching its first global survey cycle. Building on this seed funding, GNOME is now seeking to secure additional donors and strategic partners to expand its global reach, strengthen regional capacities, and ensure the long-term sustainability of this landmark initiative. What the Joint Pledge has Enabled The launch of the GNOME Initiative at the NNEdPro Global Food, Nutrition and Health International Summit 2025 in Scotland (10th to 13th December 2025). The St Andrews Satellite Event on Medical Nutrition Education on 13 December 2025, featuring active participation from both NNEdPro and PAN International. A live peer review during the NNEdPro Global Food, Nutrition and Health International Summit 2025 of the GNOME global survey design and implementation plan. The development and promotion of the GNOME microsite , including digital letters of support and joint visibility for both organisations. The establishment of a framework for future data collection , regional reports, and the first Global Observatory Report. PAN International and NNEdPro Global Institute provided formal letters of support and contribute to ongoing visibility efforts across communication platforms. New Year Plans and Road Ahead Beginning January 2026 , both organisations will jointly explore new fundraising and donour opportunities to expand GNOME’s reach and impact . Both NNEdPro and PAN International r eaffirm their shared commitment to scientific independence, transparency, and integrity in all collaborative and fundraising activities related to GNOME. What will we do with the Data and Insights from GNOME in Each Region? NNEdPro, for ~two decades, and, more recently, PAN, have a track record of global excellence in delivering medical/healthcare nutrition education. NNEdPro has also led the publication of key textbooks, including Elsevier Essentials of Nutrition in Medicine and Healthcare. GNOME will enable a range of intelligent, precise and sustainable educational interventions tailored to needs and opportunities in every region of the world, strengthening the global healthcare workforce by 2030 and beyond. Through this joint partnership, NNEdPro and PAN International are uniting their global networks, expertise, and resources to ensure that nutrition education remains a global priority , empowering the healthcare workforce to meet the nutrition challenges of the future. Invitation to Support Donate Find Out More We are delighted that GNOME is entering a collaboration with BMC Medical Education, and in 2026, together we will produce a special issue on medical nutrition education, with the GNOME leadership serving as Guest Editors. We also expect that outputs from the GNOME Initiative will be published in our partner journals, BMJ NPH and CABI Food and Nutrition Science, amongst others. OBjectives Global Observatory Establish GNOME as the international platform to collect, analyse, and disseminate data on nutrition in medical curricula. Support us Donate now the roundtable of patrons how the roundtable works The Roundtable of Patrons is a funding structure that allows organisations and stakeholders to support multiple initiatives across NNEdPro’s key areas of impact. 1. Patronage Contribution and Selection of Initiatives Each Patron contributes at their chosen tier level. Patrons at higher tiers can allocate their funding across multiple initiatives. For example, a Diamond Patron can choose up to 5 initiatives to support. A Ruby Patron can support 1-2 initiatives of their choice. Each patron directs their funding to specific areas, ensuring a targeted impact while benefiting from associated recognition and engagement opportunities. 2. The Summit vs. The Roundtable of Patrons The Summit has its own dedicated sponsorship model, while the Roundtable offers a flexible, long-term funding opportunity across multiple programmes. The Summit Supportership Packages (Platinum, Gold, Silver) are exclusive to the Summit. Organisations can support the Summit only through these packages, receiving event-specific benefits such as branding, speaking opportunities, and VIP access. The Roundtable of Patrons is a wider, year-round commitment that funds multiple initiatives, including the Summit if chosen, but it is not Summit-specific. 3. Can a Patron Support Both? Yes! An organisation can: Become a Summit Supporter through Platinum , Gold , or Silver sponsorship. Join the Roundtable of Patrons at Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, etc. to support broader initiatives. Do both—support the Summit separately while also funding additional initiatives via the Roundtable. tiers of patronage Each tier of patronage corresponds to a level of financial commitment and support, allowing stakeholders to engage at different levels. Since the Summit has its own supportership system, this patronage structure serves as a higher-level, year-round commitment that funds one or more initiatives. The tiers are as follows: Diamond Patron (Top Tier) – Supports multiple initiatives (e.g., 4-5 initiatives or major sponsorship of a flagship initiative). Emerald Patron – Supports 2-3 initiatives. Ruby Patron – Supports 1-2 initiatives. Sapphire Patron – Funds a specific project or a focused area within an initiative. Opal Patron (Entry-Level) – Provides general or unrestricted support. initiative alignment Each initiative falls within a grouping to help guide patrons towards supporting causes that align with their mission. Instead of treating initiatives as separate, they are clustered based on common themes, making it easier for organisations to choose an area that resonates with their priorities. Groupings include: Advancing Global Nutrition & Health Summit (flagship initiative) MTK International NNEdPro IANE Cutting-Edge Science & Research Data Science Human Intervention Studies BMJ Nutrition Education, Literacy & Capacity Building Summer School Literacy Libraries Leadership Training Sustainability & Future Innovations Sustainability Awards Symposium Each Patron Tier funds one or more initiatives within a grouping, ensuring that patrons can direct their contributions towards areas that reflect their values while maintaining flexibility in their impact. recognition & benefits Each tier of patronage comes with exclusive benefits to recognise and reward supporters for their contributions. Diamond Patron Named as a "Principal Patron" on all funded initiatives. Receives VIP invitations to the Summit and networking events. Gains priority branding on the website, reports, and social media. Has the opportunity to provide thought leadership through a strategic advisory role. Emerald Patron Recognised as a "Lead Patron" for selected initiatives. Invited to high-level roundtable discussions. Featured in patron newsletters and research reports. Ruby Patron Recognised as a "Major Patron" . Featured on initiative-specific promotional materials. Receives complimentary passes to select events. Sapphire Patron Recognised as a "Key Patron" . < Regional Networks page TIGR2ESS FP6 Flagship Project 6: Impacting Wellbeing in Rural and Urban Communities Project Overview Key determinants of populations health and resilience include heredity, environment, diet, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors. Within this framework, education and, empowerment are important components that can define theories of change to improve lives and livelihoods, leading to better nutrition, health and economic outcomes. Our flagship project explores the relationships between these factors through assessing needs and piloting innovative intervention models. We have brought together a multidisciplinary group of social scientists, land economists, basic scientists and a nutrition think tank to work on several interlinking sub-projects. Our work centres around two key research themes, the first on nutrition-specific Education, Food, Nutrition and Empowerment (EFNE) and the second on more general Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Empowerment (4E). These two themes are linked by two different, innovative intervention methods: Mobile Teaching Kitchens (MTKs), a teaching method pioneered by our partner NNEdPro, and food education-focused Innovation Farms, spearheaded by a team at NIAB. Central to our flagship project is capacity building. Our research will provide an evidence base from which Indian partners and stakeholders can extend, strengthen or create their own innovative initiatives which work in the settings in which they are applied. Through bringing different research disciplines and partners together to devise and test new interventions in the field, our flagship project will enhance youth skills, women’s entrepreneurship and improve nutritional literacy. How are we putting our research into practice? 6a: Education, Food, Nutrition and Empowerment (EFNE) We are working in rural communities in several locations across India. The EFNE theme, led by Professor Nitya Rao from UEA, is using participatory research methods in Maharashtra, Punjab, Orissa and Telangana to understand past and current nutrition and dietary practices in rural communities, across genders and generations. This work will inform community-led education programmes that re-introduce traditional dietary practices, backed up by modern nutrition science, to improve health and nutrition, particularly in women. 6b: Education, Employment, Empowerment and Entrepreneurship (4E) Our 4E theme, led by Dr Shailaja Fennell from the University of Cambridge, uses a variety of techniques including use of normative data, baseline household surveys and looking at the key links between education to empower communities towards developing skills and livelihoods for employment as well as entrepreneurship. In the context of agriculture and female smallholders this includes decisions on land use, impacting productivity and household income. 6a & 6b: Mobile Teaching Kitchens (MTK) and Innovation Farms Together with NNEdPro Global Centre for Nutrition and Health, led by Professor Sumantra Ray, we have adapted their MTK intervention for use in a rural setting. We are testing this adapted version at sites including Punjab and Orissa. As we refine this intervention we will roll it out to other locations, using workshops to train Indian stakeholders so that MTKs can become a self-sustaining community-led cornerstone for nutrition education in rural settings. Innovation Farms, Dr Lydia Smith from NIAB will provide an important platform for uptake of new technologies and educational materials that stem from our research. Response to COVID-19 Unhealthy diets are the leading cause of ill-health. Without dedicated action on nutrition, all forms of malnutrition are likely to increase as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on food environments. Financial hardships, reduced physical activity, and altered purchasing patterns favouring products with longer shelf-life and often poorer nutrition profiles can lead to higher levels of food insecurity, undernutrition, and overweight/obesity. We are actively responding to the pandemic. We are assessing the response of the local, state and central government and even civil society to the availability, accessibility, and affordability of food essentials. It is on record that the COVID-19 pandemic response plan was not the same for all states and districts across India. States may have various responses to ensuring food availability, depending on urban, rural and tribal contexts. Example areas of investigation include: The disruption of value chains due to staff shortages; especially fairly junior low-paid packing and sorting jobs. Such disruptions may have resulted in waste where produce could not be either picked or packed. In some cases, produce has been landfilled or suffered a much decreased value or shelf-life. An absence of traders who collect agricultural produce from the farm gate has led to dumping of fruits and vegetables in India. Reduced operational hours of markets has also caused food waste. Assessing the effects of large numbers of agricultural workers returning home to their villages after the current lockdown ends. nnedpro-iane Regional Networks Good nutrition is at the foundation of good health. We see healthcare and public health practitioners as key knowledge brokers that can promote nutrition to achieve better public health. To do this, NNEdPro in collaboration with IANE convenes regional networks across six continents and currently has members in 80 countries. The Regional Networks are overseen by the Virtual Core . Please note: Membership in our Regional Networks is voluntary and based on where members are currently active. Network coverage may vary, and not all areas within a region may be represented. Australia & New Zealand Canada Europe India & South Asia Latin America Middle East & Central Asia Pan-Africa (including Morocco) South East & East Asia United Kingdom & Ireland United States IKANN25 CROSS-CUTTING THEMES / ACTIVITIES In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic over 2020-22, we supported the following survey initiatives across all regional networks: The Language of Communicating Nutrition and Impact (LOCNI) – this will involve the translation of our 10-point guide on nutrition and COVID-19 into multiple languages evaluating the added impact of using linguistically adapted nutrition education resources Global Food and Nutrition Insecurity Survey (GFNIS): To develop a global pandemic impact picture around agri-food and health systems, GFNIS involved a semi-qualitative assessment of acute food and nutrition insecurity due to COVID-19 through a sample survey of regional network members as advocates for nutrition and health. The abstract can be found here . COVID19 Microsite Nutrition & COVID19 Across regional networks, our Education and Training Centre facilitates: the Summer School in Applied Human Nutrition the annual International Summit on Food, Nutrition and Health the International Academy of Nutrition Educators (IANE) and E-learning initiatives. Cross-Cutting Network Themes: Nutrition Education for Healthcare Professionals Featured Example : The NEPHELP (Nutrition Education Policy for Health Practice) model seeks to change the default status of nutrition education within health systems by strengthening the nutrition workforce in each region. The original NEPHELP initiative was developed in the UK, while adaptations of NEPHELP are now envisioned across regional networks internationally. From 2025, this has been superseded by the GNOME initiative . Empowering Underserved Communities in Nutrition and Health Featured Example : The Mobile Teaching Kitchen (MTK) model seeks to empower marginalised community members to become culinary health educators by bringing together change drivers, from medical and nutritional personnel to lay volunteers and NGOs, all invested in reducing nutritional inequities for better health. The original MTK initiative was developed in India, with adaptations of the MTK are now planned across regional networks internationally. Responsible Science Communication for Health and Resilience Featured Example : Commencing in 2026, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in London , we are co-creating and organising a series of scientific roundtable meetings to build consensus on the role of a ‘Scientific Forum for Advancement of Mediterranean Diet Knowledge for Human Health ’. This work will enable all partners to showcase their ongoing commitment and existing Mediterranean Diet and Food-related initiatives, highlighting the shared dedication to advancing knowledge in this critical area. Cross-cutting Network Activities: Encouraging interprofessional and interdisciplinary collaboration Development of research and innovation projects Raising awareness through advocacy campaigns Delivery of scientific webinars and presentations Delivery of education sessions

The 2023 Confluence event was an inspiring and transformational experience, featuring not only great entertainment but also delightful samples of our mouth-watering MTK dishes. The afternoon came alive with the mesmerising rhythms of Indian classical dance and music, weaving together the rich tapestry of our cultural heritage in a spectacular showcase that truly captured the spirit of Diwali. The afternoon was a journey of enlightenment, inspiration, and connection. This year's Confluence was not just an event; it was a promise of an unmissable experience.
