Global Nutrition Observatory for Medical Nutrition Education (GNOME) Initiative

Initiative managed by NNEdPro in partnership with PAN

The Global Nutrition Observatory for Medical Nutrition Education (GNOME) initiative marks a major milestone in global efforts to strengthen nutrition education for healthcare professionals. Building upon the success of the NEPHELP (Nutrition Education Policy for Health Professionals) project, GNOME serves as a global hub for evidence generation, knowledge sharing, and capacity building in medical nutrition education.

While NEPHELP empowered healthcare professionals with practical tools and highlighted the urgent need for improved nutrition training in curricula, GNOME takes the next step by:

  • Conducting annual surveys across NNEdPro’s 10 Regional Networks (over 1,000 members globally) to capture the state of medical nutrition education.

  • Generating evidence to drive policy and curriculum change, led jointly by our US and UK & Ireland Regional Networks.

  • Ensuring medical nutrition education remains a global priority, directly impacting healthcare workforce training and patient care.

In a shared commitment to advance this mission, NNEdPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health and PAN International are pledging £5,000 each towards the initiation and implementation of GNOME. This joint contribution will support the establishment of a sustainable framework for the Observatory’s activities and the rollout of its first global survey cycle.

What the Joint Pledge Will Enable

  • The launch of the GNOME Initiative at the NNEdPro Global Food, Nutrition and Health International Summit 2025 in Scotland (10th to 13th December 2025).

  • The St Andrews Satellite Event on Medical Nutrition Education on 13 December 2025, featuring active participation from both NNEdPro and PAN International.

  • A live peer review during the NNEdPro Global Food, Nutrition and Health International Summit 2025 of the GNOME global survey design and implementation plan.

  • The development and promotion of the GNOME microsite, including digital letters of support and joint visibility for both organisations.

  • The establishment of a framework for future data collection, regional reports, and the first Global Observatory Report.

New Year Plans and Road Ahead

  • Beginning January 2026, both organisations will jointly explore new fundraising and donour opportunities to expand GNOME’s reach and impact.

  • PAN International and NNEdPro Global Institute will provide formal letters of support and contribute to ongoing visibility efforts across communication platforms.

  • Both NNEdPro and PAN International reaffirm their shared commitment to scientific independence, transparency, and integrity in all collaborative and fundraising activities related to GNOME.

Through this joint partnership, NNEdPro and PAN International are uniting their global networks, expertise, and resources to ensure that nutrition education remains a global priority, empowering the healthcare workforce to meet the nutrition challenges of the future.

We are delighted that GNOME is entering a collaboration with BMC Medical Education, and in 2026, together we will produce a special issue on medical nutrition education, with the GNOME leadership serving as Guest Editors.

We also expect that outputs from the GNOME Initiative will be published in our partner journals, BMJ NPH and CABI Food and Nutrition Science, amongst others.
