Research
& Innovation

Since 2018, our research and innovation have supported the strategic development of our official journal, BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health (BMJ NPH), which we co-founded and co-own with the BMJ Publishing Group, as well as supporting the development of other journals with which we have project partnerships, such as CABI Food and Nutrition Science Cases. Whilst a proportion of our research is published in journals we co-curate, our research has generated several hundred peer-reviewed papers/outputs over the years, published in a variety of journals and all indexed online. We also published quarterly in the Complete Nutrition (CN) Magazine, where research-led evidence can be communicated to over 20K nutrition practitioners who subscribe to CN.
Since 2019, our Chief Scientist has been cross-appointed as a Full Research Professor in Global Nutrition, Health, and Disease (GNHD) within the framework of Ulster University, which is consistently ranked ‘Top in the UK for Food and Nutrition Science’. Our primary research and publications are fully aligned with the GNHD programme, and we regularly contribute outputs to the UK Research Excellence Framework. We run several hubs linked with GNHD: Data Science and Evidence Synthesis (including Dietary Assessment); Human Interventions (including Nutrition and Vascular Function); Educational and Development Studies; and Doctoral Research Projects. Each hub has several interrelated active projects across themes, including cardiometabolic, cognitive, malnutrition risk, nutrition, and non-communicable disease prevention.
In 2025, in the margins of COP30, the CREATE Centre for Population Health, Resilience and Sustainability was established within our research and innovation framework to tackle global challenges, with research looking at whole-systems approaches beyond food, nutrition and health.

Aim
To undertake primary nutrition research through basic science, human interventions, population studies and evidence syntheses to inform health policy and practice.

Primary Research Programmes (GNHD Framework)
Delivered through the Ulster University NICHE & NNEdPro Global Nutrition, Health and Disease (GNHD) Programme, our core research is structured across five interconnected hubs, each contributing to a unified, end-to-end research and innovation pipeline.
Data Sciences and Evidence Synthesis hub
Objective
Generates actionable insights through advanced data analysis and evidence synthesis to inform prevention, risk identification, and policy.

Description
This hub harnesses the power of data sharing, advanced analytics, and global research partnerships to support the timely and effective identification of cardiometabolic and nutritional risk.
Through the integration of published and unpublished datasets, including large-scale surveillance and population-specific data, the hub enables detailed analysis of dietary patterns, nutritional status, and disease risk across both at-risk and clinical populations.

Aligned with NNEdPro’s mission, the hub also plays a critical role in strengthening data literacy, evidence interpretation, and capacity for action among stakeholders across public and private health systems, supporting the translation of data into practice and policy.
Key Themes
-
Cardiometabolic health
-
Cognitive health
-
Malnutrition risk
-
Weight management
Human Intervention Studies Hub
Objective
Designs and delivers clinical and translational studies to evaluate nutrition interventions and their impact on physiological and metabolic outcomes.

Description
This hub focuses on the design and implementation of human intervention and observational studies to generate high quality clinical evidence on the role of nutrition in health and disease.

Research within this hub explores the effects of dietary components, including bioactives on vascular function, endothelial health, and metabolic outcomes. These studies contribute to advancing understanding of non-communicable disease prevention and management, aligned with global targets for reducing premature mortality.

Key Themes
-
Cardiometabolic Health & Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
-
Bioactives & Functional Foods
-
Endothelial Function & Vascular Biology
-
Inflammation & Oxidative Stress
-
Clinical Trials & Translational Research
Educational Studies Hub
Objective
Advances evidence based nutrition education and workforce development across healthcare and interdisciplinary settings.

Description
This hub addresses critical gaps in nutrition knowledge and practice across healthcare systems through the development, delivery, and evaluation of education interventions.
Through initiatives such as GNOME, it equips medical, nursing, and allied health professionals with competencies in nutritional assessment, diagnosis, and intervention, while also strengthening interdisciplinary education models that extend beyond clinical settings.
The hub also contributes to broader workforce capacity building and global education partnerships, including collaborations with organisations such as UNICEF.
Key Themes
-
Medical and healthcare nutrition education
-
Workforce capacity building
Development Studies Hub
Objective
Delivers research in underserved and global challenge settings, focusing on community resilience, equity, and context-specific intervention models.

Description
This hub builds on global challenge programmes such as TIGR2ESS, focusing on education, empowerment, and entrepreneurship to improve nutrition and health outcomes in underserved populations.

Research is conducted across diverse geographical settings, including Indigenous and vulnerable communities, with a strong emphasis on developing context-specific, scalable models that enhance resilience, wellbeing, and food systems engagement.

Key Themes
-
Nutrition in Indigenous populations
-
Vulnerable communities
-
Community resilience and wellbeing
Doctoral Studies Hub
Objective
Supports advanced research training and thought leadership in complex nutrition challenges and systems-level approaches.
Description
This hub focuses on doctoral level research and capacity building, supporting the next generation of researchers working on complex nutrition challenges.

Research themes include the burden of malnutrition, non-communicable diseases, and systems-based approaches to health, contributing to global policy and evidence development.
Key Themes
