MRC EWL Nutrition and Vascular Studies 2010-2018

Microscope in Laboratory

For several years leading up to 2018 the NNEdPro Chair’s Nutrition and Vascular Studies Platform in combination with the NNEdPro Scientific Director’s Dietary Bioactives and Health Platform formed the basis for an innovative consortium bringing together a unique combination of collaborators. This work received early recognition through a British Medical Association Research Foundation Award and has attracted significant support from a number of agencies including Research Councils.

In 2020, the NNEdPro Global Centre has expanded its Nutrition Research and Innovation Consortium (NRIC) spanning 5 academic institutions and 5 specialist organisations. Going forward the combined strengths from these hubs of research will seek to address further unanswered questions around Nutrition and Disease Prevention/Intervention, connecting the cutting edge of science to evidence-informed professional education.

Aim

To undertake primary nutrition research through basic science, human interventions, population studies and evidence syntheses to inform health policy and practice.

To produce cutting-edge research to support the achievement of the Global Development Goal to reduce by one-third premature mortality from chronic diseases by 2030, including Cardiovascular disease and related metabolic disorders. Learn more here.

The expertise of the NNEdPro team spans nutrition research, clinical practice and public health, we are well-positioned in the international effort to improve human health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, we have collated data and resources that are most relevant to current knowledge and practice relating to COVID-19, specifically in its relation to nutrition, on our dedicated microsites.

Undertaking primary nutrition research through basic science, human interventions, population studies and evidence syntheses to inform health policy and practice. Working across one or more NRIC partner institutions along with additional collaborating organisations. Learn more here.

NOTE: From March 2020 the NNEdPro Nutrition and COVID-19 Taskforce (Click here and scroll down to view membership) in partnership with BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health and working with key members of the NNEdPro Nutrition Research and Innovation Consortium will seek to take forward research and evidence synthesis relating to nutritional aspects of both the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 as well as related challenges including those related to food and nutrition security arising from this global crisis. Several individuals in the Taskforce will be co-applicants/co-investigators for Nutrition and COVID-19 related research working closely with additional internal and external collaborators of NNEdPro forming bespoke project teams dedicated to each specific initiative.

academic institutions

From January 2019 to December 2022, our former research undertaken at the MRC Elsie Widdowson Laboratory in Cambridge, has moved to Ulster University to form the NNEdPro-NICHE Global Nutrition, Health and Disease (GNHD) Programme. The strategic direction of the NNEdPro NRIC is co-led with GNHD and Ulster University.
