- Summer School Stories: Staying active with the NNEdPro community continues to open doors and create
Summer School 2018 alumni, Emily Fallon shares her story and what she’s been up to just one year after attending the Summer School I thoroughly enjoyed attending the NNEdPro summer school last year as not only did I learn all about nutrition, public health, and wellbeing from world-leading researchers and practitioners, and develop my networks in the area. I realised that my decision to become an Associate Nutritionist and study for a MSc Human Nutrition was definitely the right path. These were my initial take home messages from my summer school experience, but at almost one year later the summer school has opened doors and opportunities that I had never anticipated, and certainly were not included in my initial take homes. Since attending the 2018 NNEdPro summer events, I have enjoyed remaining an active part of the NNEdPro Global Centre for Nutrition and Health. Staying involved one year on My journey started by being nominated to be a member of the Global Research, Education and Innovation Panel, where I am part of a multidisciplinary team of academics, nutritionists, dietitians, medics and a range of other healthcare professionals. We are committed to support projects and initiatives that promote global nutrition education. My involvements thus far have included participating in monthly teleconference meetings, providing written input to public health policy documents such as for the World Health Organisation, and promoting NNEdPro activities on social media. In extension, I am working in close collaboration with NNEdPro for my MSc research project where I am honoured to work with Professor Sumantra Ray, the founding director of NNEdPro, and Professor Susan Lanham-New, the head of department of nutritional sciences at the University of Surrey, as my supervisors. I aim to investigate the vitamin D knowledge, attitudes, and practice of UK practising doctors and nurses, with the purpose to inform public health initiatives and develop professional guidelines and education for healthcare professionals to improve vitamin D health and recommendation compliance. Furthermore, I hope that our research evidences the importance of harnessing medical and healthcare nutrition education for disease prevention. To share your thoughts and participate in the survey, please click here. I had the honour of piloting my research questionnaire at the British Medical Journal International Quality and Safety in Healthcare conference with NNEdPro. Through this I was grateful to become a part of the Nutrition Education Policy in Healthcare Practice executive project management committee. As a team we presented a nutrition education workshop to an international heterogenous audience of healthcare practitioners which we will deliver to 4 other locations throughout the UK in a roadshow which I am very excited to be a part of. My other responsibilities in this project have included providing feedback on the content for the nutrition workshop and offering written input for a UK parliamentary brief regarding the importance of nutrition education in medical practice and healthcare. The support that I have received from NNEdPro has been fantastic and the opportunities that the summer school has facilitated are remarkable. The NNEdPro summer events really kick-started my nutrition career and I look forward to what I hope is a rewarding career in public health nutrition and one that closely involves NNEdPro. @EmilyFallon__ #nnephelp #nutritioneducation #nnedprosummerschool #universityofsurrey #nutritionresearch #SummerSchool
- From the Desk of the NNEdPro Chair: May 2019
Since my last update in March, we have been busy over April conducting membership surveys, an operations review, launching NEPHELP, preparing for summer events and preparing to form a UK Regional Network and Coalition of key organisations with a common vision around the implementation of Nutrition in health systems, as well as taking our first steps into Latin America! As part an internal membership refresh for 2019, we have contacted NNEdPro members in all categories to complete a short email survey. From May we expect to move forward with a fully involved membership for the remainder of the calendar year. If you have not done so already, please do respond the membership survey and do let us know your thoughts on attending / contributing to one or more of this year’s summer events. Also as part of an in-depth operations review we have determined that following our peak activity in July we will consolidate over August, followed by a 4-6 month period of resetting our programme areas and re-prioritising projects / initiatives within these. This transformation process will be informed by our internal Global Strategy Workshop on 10th July and will lead us into a new strategic plan with effect from March 2020. Alongside our housekeeping activities we have also launched the first episode of the NEPHELP (Nutrition Education Policy for Healthcare Practice) roadshow through our pilot at the BMJ conference in Glasgow and the first edition of Foundation Doctor training in Brighton. This will soon be followed by further episodes in four other areas of the NHS. We are also in the process of forming a UK Regional Network and Coalition of key organisations with a common vision around implementation of Nutrition in health systems, and further details will be announced at our Summit on 11th July. Preparations for our Summer Events in July are in full swing and we are also delighted to have launched our Membership Scheme of the International Academy of Nutrition Educators with a linked introductory e-learning package in Nutrition and Healthcare. Finally, for now, we are poised and ready for our entry to Latin America through key participation in the Bett Educar Expo as well as a series of associated educational events in Sao Paulo in mid-May which will officially launch the NNEdPro Network in Brazil. Very best wishes, Professor Sumantra (Shumone) Ray (NNEdPro Founding Chair and Executive Director) #NEPHELP #nutritioneducation #SumantraRay #UKNutrition

- Summer School Stories: Catching up with the DocX Family
A family of passionate doctors dedicated to their practice, the DocX family from Belgium share their learning experience, and what brought them to the NNEdPro Summer School 2018 last year, their top takeaways, and why they would recommend it! What brought you to the Summer School as a family? Marie: I looked for interesting courses during summer that covered aspects of medicine and health, which are not discussed often in college. My university has a sort of ‘suggestion list’ for short mobility abroad. As quickly as I saw that we had the opportunity to join a course about nutrition, I thought this would be interesting for my dad, Johan and aunt, Lieve. They are both the most dedicated family doctors I know. I’m grateful to be this close with them; they give me a lot of advice and ideas about health and medicine: for example, the importance of diet, life style, listening to patients … in short, the love and life of a general practitioner. What are your Top 3 takeaways from the Summer School and the Summit? Takeaway one from Lieve: I was delighted to be able to join this course. We heard a lot of the importance of healthy life style. It was very interesting for me, as a general practitioner, to hear which evolutions and new discoveries in healthy diet are made and how to put it into practice. Takeaway two from Johan: I totally agree with my sister. In addition to this, it was good to learn more about how to critically appraise scientific articles and what’s behind all the outcomes: the research, the science, the physiologic mechanisms in the human body. I was also able to talk and discuss diet in medicine with some interesting speakers. It was very insightful. Takeaway three (and four) from Marie: My number one highlight of the summer school was meeting new people with the same interest. Joining these exceptional colleges together and having the opportunity to discuss them afterwards is a new and fun experience to me. It stimulates me to join more training like this. Another highlight of the summit after the summer school was hearing about Nutritank. It is an initiative of medical students for medical students in Great Britain to implement the importance of diet in our courses in Medical school. I’m looking forward to work together with them to reach this awareness in my country, Belgium as well. How has the summer school and school and summit benefited you and how will you utilise your knowledge? Johan: It definitely benefited us. I followed a lot of courses about nutrition and health, and I’m still learning new things. Hepcidine, to give an example… I’m now reading more about iron, the course triggered me to look for more evidence and discoveries of this micronutrient. Lieve: I’m happy to be able to apply more specifically my knowledge about healthy diet. We all know a little bit about ‘what is healthy for us’ but now, thanks to this course, I have a stronger basis of knowledge which gives me more confidence to give advice and discuss about healthy life styles with patients. Marie: As I said before, it triggers me to join more training like this. The summer school was an eye-opener, by which I mean that it really highlighted the importance of research and its application in practice. I’m really looking forward to do something with this knowledge. Would you recommend the experience to others? Marie: Yes, definitely! If you’re eager to learn about nutrition, health and its applications, implications; This is the right course. You meet a lot of lovely people with the same passion but all of different disciplines to learn even more about the different aspects on the same subject… The experience is unique. We want to thank the organisation of NNEdPro a lot. It gave us unique insights and brought us as a family even closer together, being able to citytrip and learn (both things we love to do) about a subject (nutrition applied to health and medicine) which is of great importance and interest to us. Thank you and we’ll keep in touch 😉 #Summit #Nutrition #nutritioneducation #education #nnedpro19 #CambridgeInstituteofContinuingEducation #SummerSchool #nnedpro10 #CambridgeICE #CambridgeUniversity

- The Online Diet Wars: What is it achieving?| CN article, February 2019
As two master’s level dietetic students, authors James Bradfield and Shane McAuliffe spend a significant proportion of their time reading academic papers, commentaries and editorials. They are encouraged to critically appraise this work and to engage with the scientific community wherever possible. For many students, this means via social media. Although one might expect the usual scientific rigour and respect usually found in the lab would be found online too, this is not always true. Click here to read James and Shane’s thoughts on the Online Diet Wars … “Never did we expect that it would be a platform which could hand you a direct line to some of the most well-known and well-respected clinicians and academics in our field. It was exciting to think we could engage in debate with some of the best minds in the business. However, we soon learned that this is not always the case. Was it naïve to assume that, although people in the field come from different backgrounds and areas of research, that they would put their differences aside to consider the bigger picture around coherent public messaging?” Read on to find out about the role of social media in diet and nutrition. - The NNEdPro GODAN Partnership | CN article, November 2018
The November 2018 CN article – The NNEdPro GODAN Partnership talks about bringing the worlds of agricultural and human nutrition together through a common culture in open data. In 2016, Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) held a summit in New York, following which a partnership was formalised with the NNEdPro Global Centre for Nutrition and Health. This alliance brought together a wealth of knowledge in both open data and nutrition, to provide expertise and knowledge of opportunities and challenges across the food supply chain, and their impacts on the environment, health and wellbeing of society. Development of a Nutrition Open Data Strategy became a key collaborative focus and we are delighted to share some insights which we have gained over the past two years. We live in a data-driven world where information is key in all walks of life, as it is in the case of nutrition and agriculture practitioners. By making data open and available to those who need it most, this partnership has the broad aim of helping progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, many of which are linked to nutrition. The development of the GODAN-NNEdPro Nutrition Open Data Strategy aims to provide a method of making nutrition data openly available and accessible to everyone and adhering to data ethics procedures. NNEdPro’s International Knowledge Application Network in Nutrition Initiative 2025 (IKANN25) aims to achieve sustained impact in global healthcare systems by promulgating high quality and scaleable nutrition education. This is based on three pillars: The article was a collaborative effort written by James Bradfield, edited by Karen Chamberland and Prof Sumantra Ray with key contributions from Dr Glenys Jones, Ruthie Musker and Nida Ziaudeen. Special acknowledgements to Juliet Tumeo, Jennifer Dean, and Andre Laperriere. Would you like to share your thoughts on this article? - Food Allergy Can be Fatal | CN article, October 2018
This months’ CN article – ‘Food Allergy Can be Fatal’ – aims to raise awareness around food allergy management in nutritional healthcare. The article is dedicated to the memory of 9 year old Nainika Tikoo, who was severely asthmatic and allergic to cows’ milk protein and had an undiagnosed allergy to blackberries. In 2017 she suffered from food-related anaphylaxis and passed away three days later as a result of multisystemic complications and possible cross contamination between berries and dairy, despite standard health service interventions at the time. We discuss care provided, gaps in care, the current state of play and what we can do going forward including what NNEdPro is doing to improve the awareness and education of health professionals. The article was a collaborative effort written by Shivani Bhat and Lakshmi Kaul (Nainika Tikoo Memorial Trust), and edited by James Bradfield and Prof Sumantra Ray. Would you like to share your thoughts on this article? Please email info@nnedpro.org.uk – we’d love to hear your views! - Nutrition Science in the Lab | CN Article, July 2018
This month’s CN article turns to the expertise of Kate Guberg, a nutritional biomarkers expert and NNEdPro representative, for a discussion of reference intervals. Click here to read the full article Reference intervals are one of the most common decision tools in nutrition. They give us a range of ‘typical values for the majority of a population group’ for a particular analyte – for example, the amount of vitamin B12 in our body – in a healthy adult, female population. Continuing to use vitamin B12 as an example, those with B12 levels below or above the reference interval may need an intervention, such as supplementation, to bring their levels back up into the ‘typical or normal’ range.’ The reference interval typically covers the values that would be expected to be seen in 95% of healthy individuals within the selected population group. In the article, Kate highlights that the process of determining these reference intervals is a complex process and talks us through the factors to consider when determining a reference interval.
