Our aim is to improve nutrition-related health outcomes. our work how we work Our work comprises four overlapping verticals in nutrition and several cross-cutting horizontals. Projects Organogram Learn more about us We are an Independent Global Institute anchored in Cambridge (UK) and working across 10 regional networks involving members from over 80 countries. From 2008-2018, we were hosted by the Cambridge Institute of Public Health (supported by the NIHR School of Public Health 2008-10) and the Medical Research Council Elsie Widdowson Laboratory (supported by MRC Human Nutrition Research 2010-18) in partnership with the British Dietetic Association . With support from Innovate UK, we were incorporated as a Cambridge-based, research-intensive, independent non-profit ahead of our 10th Anniversary. We aim to improve food, nutrition, health, and sustainability outcomes by: promoting nutrition-sensitive microenterprises aimed at social equity; strengthening nutrition research at multiple levels; training professionals in clinical and public health nutrition, and influencing policymakers; providing nutrition and health-related advisory services to high-impact organisations. Our strategic plans have been aligned with the United Nations Decade of Action 2016-2025, following which we have successfully registered our strategic commitments for 2026-2030 with the Global Nutrition Report, in line with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. As of 2026, we deliver our work through the following interrelated sections, as outlined below: SOCIAL ENTERPRISE, Global operations & impact Since 2017, we have supported the development of innovative social enterprise ventures intended to contribute to nutritional equity, population health, and community resilience, such as the multi-award-winning Mobile Teaching Kitchen International Initiative (MTKi) , which operates across multiple jurisdictions. Our work in this area has been supported extensively by UKRI Global and Grand Challenges awards operated through consortia led by the University of Cambridge. Since 2019, our Institute has operated as a non-profit social enterprise hosted at St John’s Innovation Centre , Cambridge, supported by Innovate UK, and our global operations bring together a vast array of professionals from across the six continents into a single delivery framework. Our pathways to impact include international policy dialogue, the development of global youth leaders and the recognition of excellence in communities of practice through annual awards. Learn More Research & innovation Since 2018, our research and innovation have supported the strategic development of our official journal, BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health (BMJ NPH) , which we co-founded and co-own with the BMJ Publishing Group, as well as supporting the development of other journals with which we have project partnerships, such as CABI Food and Nutrition Science Cases . Whilst a proportion of our research is published in journals we co-curate, our research has generated several hundred peer-reviewed papers/outputs over the years, published in a variety of journals and all indexed online. We also published quarterly in the Complete Nutrition (CN) Magazine, where research-led evidence can be communicated to over 20K nutrition practitioners who subscribe to CN. Since 2019, our Chief Scientist has been cross-appointed as a Full Research Professor in Global Nutrition, Health, and Disease (GNHD) within the framework of Ulster University , which is consistently ranked ‘Top in the UK for Food and Nutrition Science’. Our primary research and publications are fully aligned with the GNHD programme, and we regularly contribute outputs to the UK Research Excellence Framework. We run several hubs linked with GNHD: Data Science and Evidence Synthesis (including Dietary Assessment ); Human Interventions (including Nutrition and Vascular Function ); Educational and Development Studies ; and Doctoral Research Projects . Each hub has several interrelated active projects across themes, including cardiometabolic, cognitive, malnutrition risk, nutrition, and non-communicable disease prevention. In 2025, in the margins of COP30, the CREATE Centre for Population Health, Resilience and Sustainability was established within our research and innovation framework to tackle global challenges, with research looking at whole-systems approaches beyond food, nutrition and health. IANE provides high-quality, evidence-based resources, including accredited CPD/CME courses and webinars, as well as a career development framework linked with different levels of membership and associated postnominals. IANE also hosts a series of Special Interest Groups for members, and each is linked to a Special Collection. A flagship resource of IANE is the iKANN Nutrition Research Registry , which enables knowledge exchange on upcoming studies that inform the evidence base across food, nutrition, and health. IANE is complemented by a Virtual Learning Environment where we develop and host bespoke courses targeting different groups of professional learners. Additionally, we draw on educational content from a series of textbooks in the field, which we have edited/authored/co-authored, including Essentials of Nutrition in Medicine and Healthcare , as well as the nutrition content in Essential Lifestyle Medicine. For a decade, we have been running flagship educational offerings such as our internationally renowned Cambridge Summer School and Foundation Certificate in Applied Human Nutrition , accredited by professional bodies such as the Royal Society of Biology and the Royal College of Physicians , and endorsed by the University of Parma . We are also in year 12 of our annual International Summit on Food, Nutrition and Health , bringing together key opinion leaders from across six continents each year and determining next steps in applying scientific knowledge to society through education and training, as well as advocacy and policy. Each year, the Summit Poster Competition receives scientific abstracts, which are subsequently published along with the Summit Proceedings in our flagship journal, BMJ NPH. Nutrition Education Policy in Healthcare Practice (NEPHELP) < Back Reporter Name Our Work Category Matheus Abrantes Education and Training Centre SUMMARY NEPHELP aims to improve nutrition training for doctors by developing, testing, and implementing nutrition education resources in hospitals and community settings. The project involves presenting core nutrition materials to doctors and other healthcare professionals, collecting their feedback, and tailoring the material and delivery to best fit their needs. NNEdPro uses the findings from this project to advocate for greater nutrition in mandatory healthcare curricula. BACKGROUND Nutrition training in UK medical schools is limited. Despite the fact that most doctors and medical students agree on the importance of nutrition in health and the role of doctors in promoting nutrition, studies have found that most doctors feel that their nutrition training is inadequate. As such, many doctors do not feel confident in giving nutrition advice to their patients. This lack of robust nutrition education for doctors contributes to poorer patient health outcomes. Aims - To empower doctors with greater nutrition training to become champions of nutrition in their local team. - To improve patient care and reduce the pressure of inappropriate or unsupported referrals to dietitians. - To advocate for adequate levels of nutrition education in medical school and doctor’s training. - To increase the focus on nutrition and lifestyle change to prevent and treat disease, supported by a trained healthcare workforce, working seamlessly between hospitals and the community. Outcomes - Publication of a peer-reviewed paper following a survey of junior doctor’s and medical student’s opinions of nutrition training and confidence levels. - Developed a core nutrition workshop for medical professionals and delivered this training across England. - Adapted the core nutrition workshop for an online virtual learning environment, directed at primary care doctors (GPs). Timeline 2018: NEPHELP is developed through an MNI-ESPEN funded grant 2018-2019: NEPHELP team surveys junior doctors and medical students for their opinions on nutrition training and confidence levels. A peer-reviewed paper is published in the BMJ. 2019-2020: A core nutrition workshop for medical professionals is developed and delivered across England. 2020: The nutrition workshop is adapted for an online virtual learning environment. Present: Feedback on the nutrition workshop is being collected from primary care doctors (GPS).
